How to Search for a Home Phone Number

By Maya Austen

To conduct an effective search for a home phone number, also sometimes referred to as a “residential phone number,” you need to go into the search knowing the full name of the person whose home phone number you want to find. In addition to the person’s full name, you need to know his home address. If you don’t know the person’s full home address, you must at least know the city and state where he resides.

Step 1

Check your local phone book directory if the person you want to find the home phone number for lives locally. Residential listings are arranged in alphabetical order according to last names. For example, if you want to look up the home phone number for “Bob Smith,” you’d look up listings for “Smith, Bob.” If the person’s name is not listed it may mean that the person has chosen to keep his home phone number out of the public directory, or the person’s home phone number is registered under a different name. If the person’s name is listed in the phone book, verify that the listing gives the home phone number for the “Bob Smith” you actually want to reach, for example, by comparing the accompanying address listing in the phone book with the person’s known address.

Step 2

Visit your local library. Libraries often maintain a catalog of phone book directories. If the person you want to find the home phone number for lives out of the area, you may be able to obtain the White Pages phone book serving that person’s local area at the public library.

Step 3

Look up the person’s name in an online residential phone book directory such as White Pages online or Verizon online. Enter the person’s name, and city and state of residence in the appropriate fields, then submit the information. Just as it is with paper White Pages phone books, if the person’s name is not listed it may mean that the person has elected to keep his home phone number private, or the person’s home phone number is registered under a different name. If the person’s name is listed, verify that it is the person you actually want to reach by comparing the accompanying address listing with the person’s known address.

Step 4

Dial 4-1-1. This is the directory assistance number in the United States. Provide the person’s city and state of residence when prompted. Provide the person’s full name when prompted. If the person’s number is not private and registered in the name you provided, the directory assistance operator will provide you with his home phone number.
