How to Set Up a New Laptop Computer

By Dianne Christensen-Herman

With advances in technology, newer laptop models are being manufactured on a regular basis. When you purchase a new laptop, there are certain procedures that need to be completed before using your new computer. You can set up your laptop yourself with the aid of a few programs. Doing it yourself will save you money, because many retailers charge upwards of $100 to set up a new computer.

Things You'll Need

  • Antivirus software
  • Anti-spyware software

Step 1

Install a firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware software on your laptop. These programs can be found for free online and will help protect your computer against viruses and other problems. There are also other programs available if you are willing to spend the money. Simply click "download" to install these programs and follow the on-screen directions. Run a scan on your computer to make sure the software is working.

Step 2

Add any programs that came with the laptop. Simply place the disk in the drive and follow on-screen prompts. Only install one program at a time and reboot (restart) your computer after installing each program.

Step 3

Visit the laptop manufacturer's website to see if there are any software updates for the laptop. These are usually free. Install any updates one at a time and reboot the computer before you install each program update. Install any other programs that you need at this time.

Step 4

Transfer all necessary files from your old personal computer. It is best to copy these files to a CD or save them to a flash drive, and then install on the new computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Install updates and programs one at a time, because it will be easier to notice problems that may arise.
  • Copy the program updates to a CD or other portable hard drive so you have them available for future use.
  • Write down the serial numbers and software programs you used when registering the programs. Store the information in a safe place in case you need them later.
