How to Share a USB Hard Drive Over a Network

By TS Jordan

Turning your USB External hard drive into a network storage drive allows everyone on your local network to store their files to your USB drive. Accomplish this by sharing the drive over the network using the networking components of your Windows operating system, a procedure which generally takes just minutes.

Step 1

Click "Start," right-click "Network," and select "Properties."

Step 2

Click "File Sharing," select "On," click "Password protected file sharing," and select "Off."

Step 3

Click "Manage Network Connections." Right-click your network connection, click "Properties," and check "File and Printer Sharing."

Step 4

Right-click "Start" and click "Explore." Right-click the drive letter of your USB external drive, select "Share," select "Everyone," and click "Share."
