How to Sign Up for Netflix and Use It

By Techwalla Contributor

Netflix is a service that allows you to stream movies and TV shows over the Internet. You can also rent movies and TV shows through the mail. Netflix offers a vast library of DVDs and is a reliable service. The service is free for a one-month trial period. After that, it costs a monthly fee, depending on the options you choose.

Things You'll Need

  • Credit card

Step 1

Go to Enter your email address and create a password to start your free trial account. Enter your billing and shipping information also. You will not be charged until your one free month is up, and you can cancel at any time during that month.

Step 2

Choose what service you want -- streaming only or streaming plus one DVD out at a time. Your choice will determine your monthly fee. At the time of publication, it is approximately $8 a month for streaming and another $8 a month to have one DVD out at a time. Streaming is unlimited, so you can watch as much or as little as you want at your convenience. DVDs are also unlimited as long as you only have one at a time.

Step 3

Set up your DVD queue if you chose that option. Add movies to the DVD queue in the order you want to watch them. Netflix will send you your first DVD. Netflix will allow you to keep the DVD, as long as you pay the monthly fee, until you can watch it and return it in the prepaid envelope. Once Netflix receives your DVD in the mail, the company will send you the next one in your queue.

Step 4

Go to and sign into your account to stream a movie. Once signed in, you can search by genre, title or actor/actress. Click a movie you want to watch. If it's available for streaming, you will have a "Play" option. Click "Play" to start enjoying your movie.
