How to Stop AIM From Coming on a Cell Phone

By Chris Caruso

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) forwarding enables users to receive instant messages on their mobile phones even when they are offline. When forwarding is enabled, your messages are sent to your phone as a text message whenever you sign off at your PC or set your AIM availability to "Mobile." If these messages are running up your cell phone bill or you're just plain tired of receiving AIM messages on your cell, you can disable this feature.

Step 1

Sign on to AIM on your computer. Download and install AIM for free if you do not have it already installed. (See Resources.)

Step 2

Click the "My AIM" menu, then click "Edit Options" and then select "Edit Preferences."

Step 3

Click the "IM/Chat/Mobile" tab in the left menu. Click "IM Forwarding" under the Mobile Phone heading.

Step 4

Enter your cell phone number when prompted and then click "Send." Wait for "My Mobile Dashboard" to automatically pop up.

Step 5

Select the blue "Edit" button next to "IM Forwarding Status." A new window will pop up. Check the box next to "IM Forwarding OFF" and then click "Save."
