How to Tell if a CD-ROM Drive is Broken

By Stephen Lilley

If the CD-ROM drive in your computer is broken, the easiest way to confirm this would be to use the Windows Device Manager. This is a utility that is built into your operating system that is designed to tell you whether a piece of hardware is functioning properly or if there is an issue. If an issue is present, the Device Manager will also give you tips on how you can fix it yourself as opposed to paying someone to do it for you.

Step 1

Right-click on "My Computer" then select "Properties" from the menu that appears.

Step 2

Click "Hardware."

Step 3

Click "Device Manager" to open the utility.

Step 4

Scroll down to the listing for the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM drive is working fine, there will be no status notification icons next to its listing. If the CD-ROM drive is broken, there will be a small yellow and black icon next to its listing.
