How to Track a Craigslist Ad

Craigslist.org is a website that allows you to buy and sell merchandise and services -- anything from an old computer to lawn mowing services -- online. You post ads regionally, offering to sell an item or a service; potential buyers then respond to those ads. Because Craigslist does not allow JavaScript or Flash scripting languages, you have to use an image tracker and know basic HTML to track how many potential buyers are viewing your Craigslist ad.

Tracking page views shows you the popularity of the product or service offered.

Step

Create a new ad on Craigslist. Log onto your account and click the "Go" button in the upper-right corner. Specify what you're selling, select a title for your ad and list a price.

Step

Log onto a third-party website that allows image-based tracking, such as StatCounter.com or CraigslistAdTracker.com. Both of these websites track your ad's views free, but you must first register your account; this is also free.

Step

Create the HTML code for your ad. StatCounter only generates the image tracker, which generates an HTML code that begins with "<img". With Craigslist AdTracker, you can use the site to generate the entire text of your ad in HTML, including the tracking code.

Step

Insert the HTML code generated in Step 3 into the "Posting Description" text box on Craigslist. If you used a site like Craigslist AdTracker that generates the entire ad in HTML, just copy and paste the code in its entirety into this text box. If you used a site that only generated the "" and ending it with "

"; insert the description in between so it looks like

Step

Track the number of page views to your Craigslist ad by repeatedly visiting the website on which you created the HTML tracking code. Log onto your account on this website and select the title of your tracking project to see tracking statistics, such as how many page views your ad received over a specified period of time, such as a day, a week or a month.
