How to Track a Craigslist Ad
Create a new ad on Craigslist. Log onto your account and click the "Go" button in the upper-right corner. Specify what you're selling, select a title for your ad and list a price.
Log onto a third-party website that allows image-based tracking, such as StatCounter.com or CraigslistAdTracker.com. Both of these websites track your ad's views free, but you must first register your account; this is also free.
Create the HTML code for your ad. StatCounter only generates the image tracker, which generates an HTML code that begins with "
Insert the HTML code generated in Step 3 into the "Posting Description" text box on Craigslist. If you used a site like Craigslist AdTracker that generates the entire ad in HTML, just copy and paste the code in its entirety into this text box. If you used a site that only generated the "" and ending it with ""; insert the description in between so it looks like
I am selling three bags of clothes.
Winter clothes for girls, sizes 4T to 6T.
Track the number of page views to your Craigslist ad by repeatedly visiting the website on which you created the HTML tracking code. Log onto your account on this website and select the title of your tracking project to see tracking statistics, such as how many page views your ad received over a specified period of time, such as a day, a week or a month.
Tips & Warnings
- Craigslist ads remain active for 45 days, so you have time to track visits to your ad and compare changes to these page views over time.
- There is not a way to track a Craigslist ad if you are a potential buyer; in this case, your only option is to bookmark the ad on your browser and return to the site frequently to see if the price has changed or the item has been removed from Craigslist's active listings.
- Familiarize yourself with Craigslist's policies on which goods and services may be bought and sold before listing an ad or making a purchase.
