How to Turn Off a McAfee Virus Scan

McAfee Virus Scan automatically scans your computer for virus and worm attacks using it's Active Shield program. Active Shield, detecting a virus, will automatically attempt to clean the file to prevent an attack while sending you an alert. There are instances, such as when you are installing a new program or removing malware, when it may be necessary to temporarily disable your McAfee Virus Scan. This is easily done in a few steps.

Turn Off Anti-Virus

Step 1

Navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner of your computer screen and look for a red "M" sign. This is the symbol for the active McAfee program.

Step 2

Right click on the red "M." This will secure a menu for McAfee Virus protection program.

Step 3

Click on "Exit" or Disable." Click 'Yes" when message asks you if you are sure. This will disable the McAfee Anti-Virus program.

Turn Off McAfee Security Center

Step 1

Double click on the red "M" at the bottom right corner of your computer. This will open McAfee Security Center.

Step 2

Click on "Real-Time Scanning:on" to create a menu. Click on "Scheduled Scan Settings" on the right. Click on "Turn Off". This will turn off all scans scheduled for your computer.

Step 3

Click on "Firewall" on the McAfee Security Center menu. Click on "Settings." Click on "Turn Off." This will disable the firewall and your McAfee Security Center is now disabled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to turn on your McAfee virus protection after adding a program or troubleshooting your database. This will return your status on the McAfee Home Page to "secure." .
