How to Upgrade an iPod Touch Software

By Aaron Wein

Apple develops and releases new software updates for the iPod Touch operating software on a regular basis. These upgrades range from unnoticeable technical fixes to major program upgrades to completely new features. Like most aspects of Apple's products, upgrading the iPod Touch software is nearly automated. Plug the device into your computer and access the iPod Touch "Check for Update" feature to determine if any system upgrades are available. If there is an update, iTunes automatically installs it for you.

Step 1

Hook the iPod Touch up to your computer with the device's USB cable.

Step 2

Launch iTunes on your computer.

Step 3

Click your iPod Touch name below "Devices" in the center of the left column in iTunes.

Step 4

Click the "Summary" tab.

Step 5

Click the "Check For Update" button in the center pane. ITunes checks for updates.

Step 6

Click the "Update" button if prompted to install the new software version. ITunes takes several minutes to update your iPod Touch software. If you already have the latest update, a message appears informing you that your iPod Touch is up to date.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not disconnect the iPod Touch during the update.
