How to Use an iPhone as an Apple TV Remote

By Billy Kirk

The Apple TV ships with a remote that isn't necessarily ideal for text input or for maneuvering around the Apple TV's interface. Fortunately, the "Remote" application for the iPhone is available for free download from Apple, and this app turns your iPhone into a full-fledged Apple TV remote, using a browsing interface iPhone users are familiar with. While you will also have to join your Wi-Fi network on your iPhone and enable Home Sharing, no unique technical knowledge is required.

Things You'll Need

  • "Remote" App for iPhone

Step 1

Turn on your iPhone and launch the App Store via the "App Store" icon. This is the blue icon that is located by default on the bottom row of icons on the home screen of your iPhone. It will be listed literally as "App Store."

Step 2

Search for the Remote app by typing "Remote" into the App Store's search bar. Choose to install this app on your iPhone. You will have to input your iTunes username and password to confirm the installation procedure.

Step 3

Turn on Home Sharing within iTunes. Click on the "Home Sharing" listing on the left navigation screen within iTunes once you have launched the iTunes program.

Step 4

Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted.

Step 5

Connect your iPhone to your home Wi-Fi network. If you do not already have this connection established, click on the "Settings" icon of your iPhone.

Step 6

Click on the second listing within "Settings" that reads "Wi-Fi - Not Connected." Ensure that the "Wi-Fi" setting within this listing is switched to "On."

Step 7

Select a network in the "Choose a Network..." field. There will likely be more than one listing here. Be sure to select your home Wi-Fi network. This will connect you to Wi-Fi. If your Wi-Fi network is password protected, when selecting it for use, you will need to input this password into your iPhone.

Step 8

Launch the Remote app and sign into Home Sharing when prompted using your iTunes ID and password.

Step 9

Control your Apple TV by using your iPhone as the remote with the Remote app now launched and Home Sharing and Wi-Fi enabled. The Remote app uses an interface that is identical to how you navigate and browse videos on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, so finding and purchasing movies and controlling them on your Apple TV will be immediately intuitive. You can back out of the Remote app and resume normal use of your phone whenever you like. The physical remote that ships with the Apple TV can still also be used.
