How to Use Rice to Get Rid of Water Damage in a Phone

By Collier Jackson

You were lounging by the pool when you accidentally knocked your phone into the water. Now what? Although you might fear that your phone is destroyed, if you act quickly, you have a chance to save it. Using canned air will get rid of most of the surface water, but to remove the moisture trapped deep inside, you will need to use something else. Surprisingly, rice is naturally absorbent enough to pull the water out of the phone over several hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium-sized bowl
  • 1 to 3 cups dry rice
  • Canned air

Step 1

Remove the battery from the phone.

Step 2

Use the canned air to blow out as much of the water as you can.

Step 3

Fill your bowl with about half of the rice and place the cell phone and battery on top of the rice.

Step 4

Pour enough of the remaining rice into the bowl to cover the phone and battery.

Step 5

Allow the phone to sit in the rice overnight. In the morning, most of the residual moisture will have been absorbed the the rice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the battery as soon as you can. The goal is to immediately cut the power to the electronics of the phone and prevent as much water damage as possible.
