How to Use Winrar to Unrar a File

By Contributing Writer

WinRAR is a program that users of torrents commonly use to unpack a compressed file with a "rar" file extension. These WinRAR files are similar to ZIP files in that they are packed into smaller files for ease of downloading and opening. Each WinRAR file can contain hundreds of other files with many different file extensions such as ".exe," ".zip," ".dll" and ".bin." WinRAR will open all of these files in a short period of time once they are downloaded.

Step 1

Click on the Windows "Start" button, select "All Programs," choose WinRAR and click on the "WinRAR program shortcut. This will open the program and ready it for use.

Step 2

A list will generate inside the frame of your program window. This is a list of all possible files that you can open in this session. If you do not see the file you are looking for, click the "File" menu and select "Open Archive."

Step 3

Navigate to the file you wish to open. Double-click on the file that you wish to unpack. This will open the file so that all of the compressed files inside the mother file are opened. Choose the file you wish to open further from this section of available files. Once you find the file you want, double-click on it to open.

Step 4

A new window will pop up that says "Extracting From OS.7z"; this is the WinRAR file type. You will see two status bars showing you the progress of the unpacking. If you want to pause this extraction, click the "Pause" button.

Step 5

Find the ".exe" file. This is the executable file or the file extension that begins the process of opening your file. Double-click on the ".exe" file; this will set the program or file in motion.
