A solid product. Despite some flaws, it's still a good value.

PROS

  • Stocked with an Intel Core-series processor, the Alpha 12 runs faster than competing tablets that use lower-end chips.
  • Acer bundles a spacious, backlit keyboard, though a stylus costs you $50 extra.
  • The Alpha 12 is the only tablet in its class with a fanless design. A water-based cooling system allows it to run completely silent.

CONS

  • The Alpha 12's battery life pales in comparison with other hybrid tablets, ranging from just 3.5 to 5 hours in most rundown tests.
  • The keyboard isn't great for ham-handed typists. It gives a little, especially when in its default, raised position. The optional pen lacks precision.
  • Despite the impressive addition of water cooling, the Alpha 12 can get warm.
The Aspire Switch Alpha 12 is a Windows tablet that can also pull laptop duty. That's because Acer supplies a keyboard at no extra charge, unlike certain other tablets with a higher starting price. Here you get a similar ultra-high resolution display and ample horsepower for everyday computing--especially if you venture a bit beyond the baseline configuration.

The Switch Alpha 12's tablet-only portion feels solid in the hand. Its 0.37-inch, 1.98-pound footprint is noticeably thicker and heavier than the ultra-sleek Huawei MateBook, which comes in at 0.4 inch thick but just 1.4 pounds. Nonetheless, we still felt comfortable wielding this tablet one-handed.

Of all the models attempting to emulate or improve on the Microsoft Surface's design, I think this one succeeds best. The system feels high quality and durable: it even passed an impromptu pushed-off-the-table-at-Starbucks test.

Also not cool: the amount of preinstalled crap on this computer. It’s standard practice for PC makers to subsidize the cost of budget machines with lots of third-party software, and Acer has certainly done so here.

The addition of a USB 3.1 port that can be used to power devices, transfer files or attach the device to an external monitor is another nice bonus. The accompanying full-sized USB 3.0 port makes the Switch Alpha 12 significantly better connected than many competing convertibles.
