PROS

  • Setting up the 3D Idea Builder is simple.
  • The printer firmware updates are easy to perform.
  • Downloadable models are available at Dremel's website.

CONS

  • 3D models must be saved to Dremel's proprietary format before they can be printed.
  • Dremel recommends using its proprietary PLA filament, which is more expensive than other filaments.
  • The Dremel 3D software is a bit buggy.
The Dremel 3D Idea Builder is a single extruder 3D printer with 4GB of internal storage and a 3.5-inch touch screen. It’s fairly compact and weighs just 19 pounds without the spool. The Idea Builder supports SD cards up to 32GB in size and a direct USB connection. Dremel recommends using its proprietary PLA filament for best results. The included 3D modeling software is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu Linux. The Dremel website contains a large collection of 3D models available for download.

The Idea Builder works best with Dremel’s proprietary PLA filament, though will not print ABS due to lack of a heated printer bed.

The effortless setup and fault free printing dramatically increases the value of this printer. I wasted zero filament due to how easy the setup and configuration was and even after all the prints I’ve made, my spool still looks brand new.

Of the various prints I generated with the Idea Builder, they ranged in print time from as little as 30 minutes to about 2 hours, but print time is completely dependent on the complexity and size of your model. There are intricate models out there that can take 4 to 6 hours or more. In the realm of extruder-based 3D printers, the Idea Builder is reasonably fast.
