VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • The HRT dSp and i-dSp offer an external DAC interface at a reasonable price
  • The digital sound processors are small, lightweight, and easy to carry.
  • The dSp easily pairs with a laptop, PC, or Android phone. The i-dSp pairs with an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using a camera kit cable.

CONS

  • The plastic case seems fragile and might not stand up to rough use.
  • There can be connectivity issues when you actively move around. There is no easy way to attach the dSp to a device.
  • The cables look substantial but there have been complaints of breaking or bending. The i-dSp requires you to buy the Apple camera kit cable.
For $70, the HRT dSp or i-dSp boosts the audio of your Android or iOS devices in a compact portable form. The dSp connects directly to your Android device, and the i-dSp connects to your iPhone, iPod, or iPad via the camera kit cable (not included). They work by converting digital input into high quality analog output for your headphones. When combined with high-res audio files, such as FLAC, AAC, and Apple Lossless, and a good pair of headphones, you get results on par with your home sound system. As a plug-and-play device, there are no tone or volume controls on the dSp and i-dSp; you control the device from your iPhone, iPod, or Android device.

You can tell the primary objective that HRT set out to accomplish with the dSp was to output clean detail that you were not seeing (er…hearing) from your average DAC. Let’s just say mission accomplished.

if you're looking to wring every iota of sound from the music that is important to you and don't want to be getting an "abridged" version just because you're not at home, then adding in a DSP, as in i-dSp, for your iPhone (5 series/6 series) and/or current Touch/iPads is as sensible as it gets.

All in all the new HRT effort does bring the music a few steps closer which is most welcome, but it often made me wonder if it was possible to squeeze out a few more, if only baby ones.
