Spectre x2by HP
PROS
- The Spectre x2 has a metallic finish, rounded edges, and a cool-looking kickstand.
- The keyboard is included, and it adds extra speakers to the ones already built into the tablet. That makes the Spectre x2 one of few tablets to offer quad-speaker audio.
- One of the two rear-facing cameras captures 3D images.
CONS
- At 2.65 pounds with the keyboard cover, the Spectre x2 is slightly heavy.
- The Spectre offers slower processors and a lower-resolution screen than some competitors.
- Integrated 4G LTE option is limited to Verizon's network.

Ultimately, the HP Spectre x2 is an excellent device, though with some caveats whenever it tries to differentiate from the crowd. It's the only Windows tablet to feature a quad-speaker setup, but it only helps pump up volume without adding depth to the audio experience..

The slim frame means there's limited space for ports. There are only two USB-C ports and a headset jack on the entire tablet. The AC adapter uses either of the USB-C ports to charge the Spectre x2, so only one port is available when the tablet is plugged in.

HP’s formula for its new Spectre x2 is pretty simple: Clone the look and feel of Microsoft’s popular Surface and sell at a price that heavily undercuts it. But the result is actually a lot more nuanced.

Some big advantages to me are the hinge design, the LTE capability and the dual USB type C connectors on both sides. It’s a nice thing to have the ability to charge on either side of the tablet. I do wish they put a USB type A slot though, because carrying a dongle around at all times is going to be painful for some.

The Spectre x2 has a lot of features that show off how good a 2-in-1 can be. Its metal-backed keyboard offers a great typing experience, and the quad B&O speakers and Intel RealSense 3D Camera are nice bonuses that help bring a spark to everyday computing.

There are two cameras, one on the front that offers 5-megapixels for shooting and videocalls, but it is the rear that has the most wow factor. It is an Intel RealSense camera that can also map the surroundings in 3D so can be used with augmented reality applications, such as placing furniture in your living room to see what it would look like.

While the keyboard is covered in fabric on the back, the top of it looks just like any other laptop keyboard. It's made of metal. It has chiclet keys. They're even raised up and travel down when pressed. Typing on it feels almost entirely normal — the only giveaway that it's an attachment is that the keyboard tends to bounce ever so slightly when you type a bit hard.

All things considered, HP’s Spectre x2 looks nice on paper and even in person, especially considering the price, but after using it for a couple of weeks I’ve discovered some real issues with it.

If you like the cut of the Microsoft Surface Pro’s jib but prefer something a little more affordable, check out the HP Spectre x2. This tablet really can replace your laptop (to say nothing of your desktop), because a keyboard is included in the box.

The screen is a particular success. HP has not only optically bonded the touch panel to the display itself - meaning brighter colors and fewer internal reflections - it's used what's called Panel Self Refresh (PSR) technology to keep battery consumption down.
