PROS

  • The Shine's minimalist, futuristic look is unique among fitness trackers.
  • You can wear it on your wrist or clip it anywhere on your clothing. It's even waterproof.
  • The battery runs for four to six months before you need to swap it.

CONS

  • The Shine doesn't have an altimeter, so it can't count the stairs you climb.
  • Several reviewers found the measurements weren't completely accurate.
  • Whether you want to view the time or your fitness status, you may have to wait. The Shine is sometimes slow to respond to taps.
The Misfit Shine is a fitness tracker with a unique look. Wear it on your wrist or clip it anywhere on your clothing and it will track your exercise, swimming, walking, sleep, and other types of activity. It syncs with an app available for iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone so you can view your activity on your phone. Despite the standout appearance, the Shine works similarly to other modern fitness-tracking wristbands, combining low-power sensors and Bluetooth low energy for syncing with your phone.

Although this device does a great job at tracking your sleep habits and exercise, we found that it isn't completely accurate. Steps and calories burned are over-exaggerated, and the Shine doesn't have a heart rate monitor to track your target heart rate zones.

The Shine’s best feature is that it looks quite a bit like jewelry; there’s no way to tell you’re wearing anything electronic.

It's really no different from a lot of other fitness trackers that are popping up all over the place like dandelions: It uses a three-axis accelerometer to track movement and act as a pedometer. It has Bluetooth for syncing data with iOS devices.
