VERDICT
Clearly above average. Only a couple of issues keep this from being best in class.

PROS

  • Unlocked and supported by both GSM and CDMA networks, the phone works with Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
  • Water-repellent coating lets users sleep easy knowing the phone can withstand life's occasional splashes.
  • The price point is a fraction of what you spend with bigger name brands, yet the G4 is still enough phone for most.

CONS

  • The specifications match the price point, meaning the phone isn't designed with high-end performance in mind.
  • Consumers must buy the phone through Motorola as it's not offered through carriers.
  • The phone feels sturdy, but it is definitely made of plastic.

Other noteworthy details include a 3,000 mAh battery with TurboPower charging capability and a water-repellent coating. The G4 is sold in black or white base colors, but customers can create a customized G4 through Motorola's Moto Maker online tool.

At the same time as enlarging the screen, it has slimmed down the case significantly, and it now measures 2mm thinner than the Moto G3.

It’s fast, has a great camera for the cost, a bright screen and Nexus-like software. I do have some reservations about the size, but honestly every other affordable phone maker should be worried. Seriously worried.

There are no frills when it comes to connectivity – there's still no NFC which is a shame but the Moto G4 does have that all-important 4G LTE support (still Cat 4). Bluetooth is now version 4.1 and Motorola has stuck with a traditional Micro-USB port rather than the newer Type-C.

Motorola's unique gestures, which made their debut on the original Moto X, once again make an appearance. Twisting either phone twice, similar to turning a door handle, quickly loads up the camera from anywhere in the OS.

If it’s one thing that Motorola’s known for, it’s keeping Android relatively free from bloatware and excessive interface changes. It continues that tradition with the Moto G4 and G4 Plus, which is quite the relief considering Lenovo’s reputation for overstuffing its smartphones and tablets with superfluous apps.

It's not the fastest phone, and the camera isn't the greatest, but it's far better on both counts than I would expect from a $200 device.

In your hand, the Moto G4 feels sturdy, but definitely made of plastic. The back plate is smooth, with a textured cross hatch that can feel a bit strange at first, especially if you're moving to the G4 from a metal framed phone. Despite its large screen, the phone fits and can be used with a single hand.

Like the original Moto G, the G4 focuses mostly on what's important, cutting out extraneous frills and focusing on being a good $200 phone.

In ordinary use, we were able to get through well over a day before we had to charge it, even with continuous 4G connectivity. The bundled Turbo charger isn't quite as quick as the one that comes with the Moto G4 Plus, but still manages to charge the device fairly quickly.
