Noon VR is a simple headset that displays VR content on most recent smartphones from 4.7 to 5.7 inches in size. Optimized for head tracking via your smartphone's gyroscope, ventilated and offering a 95-degree field of view, the design is sleek with no external controls. Just load the phone in front of the lenses and secure it with the sturdy strap. Then, tap the back of the phone to access the app's controls. The Noon VR works with a dedicated Noon VR app. You can use the Noon VR headset to view 2D videos, stereoscopic 3D, or 360-degree VR videos.

the Noon VR lacks any kind of input button with which you can interact with the screen while the headset is in use. Thus, you need to constantly unhook the rubber strap to release the handset, use it then put it back in again – even to select a menu option in-app.

The Noon VR is definitely a nice looking piece of equipment. All of the other Google Cardboards I have come across either look like, well, cardboard or are a bit large and clunky. Noon VR has a stylish logo and sleek straps. Even the the air vents look silky smooth. It would almost seem like more effort was put into the appearance than the feel of the device.

If nothing else, NextCore has demonstrated that VR has real applications outside of gaming and whatever god awful social media spiel Facebook has in mind. But that isn’t all. The NOON is a competent but dodgy device, fairly good at what it does but handicapped by the calendar. At the moment, it’s not much more than two hours of fun and a unique thing to pull out at parties. But as it and the KOOM ecosystem gain users and content, it could very well blossom into something more substantial. Much like VR as a whole, it’s just too early to tell.

The controls (all motion) are pretty much perfect. There's no separate controller or device to use -- one just moves their head to aim or select UI options. It probably sounds wacky to some of you who haven't tried VR yet, but it's very comfortable, and you can play it anywhere.

There is no way for you to see if the phone is correctly positioned in front of the lenses without strapping on the device first. Therefore, it grants a major task of doing trial-and-error to get to the right position.

Mobile VR is taxing on smartphones, and the Noon headset has plenty of cutouts to let excess heat escape. That’s a nice feature, but some of the cutouts can let in light in bright environments. That isn’t great for creating a sense of immersion. In all, the design of the headset itself probably needs to go back to the drawing board.

The rubberised grip that holds the smartphone to the unit is a good substitute for the Gear VR’s Micro USB port, but as there’s no connectivity between the handset and headset it does mean that head-tracking is dependant on the gyrometers included onboard the smartphone, akin to Google Cardboard.
