PROS

  • The screen is big and bright for a budget-friendly phone.
  • The removable battery is sufficient for a full day with normal usage.
  • The 13-megapixel shooter is good enough to get the job done.

CONS

  • Only 8GB of internal storage out of the box is not enough to do much of anything.
  • A 5.7-inch phone is big, no matter how you look at it. Some may find it too big.
  • The Windows Phone app ecosystem is falling further behind iOS and Android.
The Lumia 640 XL is a Windows phablet with a display that measures 5.7 inches, a 13-megapixel camera on the back, and a 5-megapixel camera on the front. Inside the 640 XL is 8GB of storage, support for a microSD card, 1GB of memory, and a 3,000 mAh battery. The back of the device comes off, allowing users to change the look and feel of the phone.

Windows Phones in general are in short supply, which means that we’re more accepting of phablet-sized ones even more, especially when they’re even rarer to find in the wild. Far from being a specs beast meant to tackle on the big names in space, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL carries a refreshing balance of value and performance.

If you're on a budget and you want a big phablet-style handset, then give the Lumia 640 XL some serious consideration. The only unknown is how much of a difference Windows 10 is going to make, so you might want to hold off for a few months until the first reviews appear.

Microsoft dropped some extras with the Lumia 640 XL LTE. In particular, I’m not thrilled with the lack of a physical camera button. Forcing users to buy a separate cover to get wireless charging isn’t awesome either. Both complaints are the result of owning a Lumia before.
