The Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth Smart is a foot pod that attaches to your sneaker. It measures your stride and, after a calibration, calculates distance and offers data to improve your cadence and running technique. Because this device relies on an accelerometer and not GPS, it can be used indoors, even on a treadmill. It fits securely to a cradle that you affix to your shoelaces. The Polar Stride sensor currently works with iOS devices, which support Bluetooth 4.0+. Its coin cell battery lasts about a year.

There’s really only one area that I can think of that I’m unhappy with, and that’s the size of the footpod.

Because it doesn't rely on GPS, it can also be used on a treadmill, where the user isn't actually going anywhere.

Using the device just a few times, I was able to take 30 seconds off my mile time by taking smaller steps. For a runner, that is pure gold.
