Road trips can be fantastic. They save you tons of money on airfare, checked luggage, airport food, car rental, and more. All you need to do is figure out where you're headed, pack up the car and you're off. Oh, and if you're traveling with your kiddos, you'll also need to bring endless entertainment options to make sure no one goes completely insane.
Travel board games are great; books are even better. But ultimately, your kids will be entertained the longest with some assortment of tech gadgets. So to keep your long road trip relatively peaceful (we can only do so much), we've rounded up some of the best travel gadgets to help keep your kids entertained while you do things like... drive.
Portable DVD player
This one's probably pretty obvious, but it's long been an essential gadget for the car. Since most cars don't have access to Wi-Fi, watching streaming video has generally been out of the question.
Bring a portable DVD player and your kids will be entertained for literally hours. If you have multiple kids and some extra cash, save yourself the headache and purchase multiple DVD players (and headphones, for the love of all things holy). Or just listen to them argue about movie selections once every hour and half. Your call!
Amazon has a plethora of DVD player options to choose from.
We'd be remiss not to point out that some recent innovations might be rendering the DVD player obsolete. You can now download Netflix movies to your tablet or phone, for example, and if you subscribe to YouTube Red, you can save videos for offline viewing there as well. And PlayOn is a service that does the same thing for virtually any streaming service, which we talk about in a recent epsiode of the One Cool Thing Podcast.
Nintendo 3DS XL
This handheld device is cool for so many reasons. Not only will your kids be able to play games forever (or at least for as long as you want them to), the Nintendo 3DS XL has a 3D camera that allows you to take 3D pictures and record 3D videos.
It also comes with tons of built-in features and applications. Not to be dramatic, but it's pretty much a lifesaver.
The new Nintendo 3DS is available for $199.99.
Amazon Fire Kids Edition
This magical device offers unlimited free access to 10,000 kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational app and games. It also includes an entire free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited.
Available in blue, green and pink kid-proof cases, the Fire is basically unbreakable. But if it does happen to break, Amazon will replace it for up to two years — no questions asked.
It's available for $99.99 on Amazon.
Yep, Apple still offers an iPod, and it's pretty inexpensive. Equipped with one, you'll never listen to your kids nag you to change the radio station ever again. The iPod Nano gives them complete control over their music, while simultaneously keeping them occupied.
It also comes with the option to watch videos, TV shows and movies. The Nano is available in gold, silver, blue, pink, red and space gray.
You can get the 16GB from Apple for $149.
Discovery Kids Bilingual Teach and Talk Tablet
Want to keep your kids busy while they learn things at the same time? Get this tablet. Seriously, it's incredible.
The Discovery Kids Bilingual Teach and Talk Tablet features over 60 interactive activities, allowing kids to learn about history, sports, animals, music, etc in either English or Spanish.
You can find it on Amazon for under $20.
