How to Autotune Your TV

By James Stuart

If you do not subscribe to cable or satellite television services, you may have to adjust your television to get the best signal. With the autotune function, your television will scroll through every available channel and save the ones with the strongest signals. Subsequently, when you press the channel up and channel down buttons, you will be scrolling through the saved channels. The exact process for autotuning your television will depend on the model you own, but a few general principles are common to most television sets.

Step 1

Press the "Autotune" button in your television's control panel. Some models of television have buttons that will autotune your television automatically. This button may resemble two connected triangles.

Step 2

Press the "Menu" button on your remote control. It may also be called "Options," "Tools" or something similar.

Step 3

Press the "Menu" button on your television if you do not have a remote control. This button is sometimes concealed behind a plastic panel you will have to open.

Step 4

Scroll through the menu options and look for a "Settings" option using the arrow keys on your remote control or television. The autotune function is sometimes also found under "Channels," "Tool Box" or similar tabs. If you're having trouble locating the autotune function, check under each tab.

Step 5

Press the "Enter" button to select the autotune function. If you're selecting the option directly on the television set, you may have to press the volume up button instead.

Tips & Warnings

  • Autotune may be called "Autoprogramme" on some television sets.
  • Before autotuning, switch to a channel you know you receive and adjust your antenna to get the clearest signal. This will ensure you get the most channels during autotuning.
