How to Change a Sprint Phone to a Pre-Paid Boost Phone

By Amy McClain

Boost Mobile is a company that offers contract free, pay-as-you-go solutions to wireless customers. Their prepaid service features a wide variety of phone choices. Boost Mobile's iDEN phones feature push to talk capability and operate on Sprint's Nextel network. Boost also offers some phones that operate on Sprint's CDMA network. If you have a previously used Sprint Nextel iDEN device, it can be reactivated and used with Boost Mobile's prepaid service.

Things You'll Need

  • Compatible Nextel iDEN phone
  • Credit or debit card

Step 1

Ensure that the old device you have is compatible. Any Nextel iDEN device will work. If you have a phone that was previously used on the Nextel push-to-talk network, it is likely compatible. Typically, the phone will be labeled somewhere with the Nextel company name and will have a slot for a SIM card.

Step 2

Using your computer, point your Internet browser to Click on the "Activate" link.

Step 3

Click the link on the activate page that says "Order a Starter Kit." This will bring up a page that allows you to order the Boost Mobile SIM card required for your old device to work. Place your starter kit in your shopping cart and follow the prompts to complete your order.

Step 4

Once you receive you starter kit, insert the included Boost Mobile SIM card into your existing phone. You may then complete the setup of your Boost Mobile account by following the instructions included with the starter kit.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not wish to order the starter kit online, check Boost Mobile's website to find nearby retailers.
  • Sprint CDMA devices cannot be reactivated with Boost Mobile. Only Sprint Nextel iDEN devices are able to be used.
