How to Change the Contacts on iPhone to the First Name First

By Alana Grelyak

The default settings of the Contacts app on your new iPhone alphabetizes your contacts by last name and sorts them for display by last name first, first name last. If you’d rather have your contacts sorted and displayed by first name, you can easily make the change. After you reverse the order, you may find this is a better option for finding your contacts quickly.

Step 1

Go to the "Settings" icon and tap it.

Step 2

Tap the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" option. Scroll down until you see the Contacts section.

Step 3

Tap "Sort Order" and choose "First, Last." This action sorts your contacts in alphabetical order by the first name.

Step 4

Tap "Mail" in the top left corner of the screen to go back to the Mail, Contacts & Calendars menu.

Step 5

Tap "Display Order" and choose "First, Last." This will ensure that your contacts are not only alphabetized by first name but displayed that way as well.

Step 6

Go to your Contacts app to make sure the order has changed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your contacts are alphabetized by first name but are displayed with the last name first, go back into the Contacts settings and make sure that both the "Sort Order" and "Display Order" options match.
