How to Connect a Laptop to an Old TV

By J. Anthony Cooley

You laptop lets you take your computer and important files with you, but the more portable a laptop is, the smaller the screen. A quick way to remedy a small laptop screen is to connect your laptop to a TV. If you have an old TV that doesn't have all the convenient connection options that the newer TVs now have, you can still connect your laptop computer to your TV.

Things You'll Need

  • S cable
  • S cable-to-RCA video jack
  • RCA video cable
  • 3.5 mm audio-to-RCA cable

Step 1

Connect one end of the S cable to the laptop and connect the other end to the S cable port of the S cable-to-RCA video jack. Look at the design on the S cable and then examine the S cable port so you can position the S cable the right way before you stick it into the port. Never force an S cable into the port because it will cause the pins to bend.

Step 2

Connect one end of the RCA video cable to the back of the TV and connect the other end to the RCA video port of the S cable-to-RCA video jack. This will connect the video to the TV; however, if you want the sound to play off the TV as well, you will need to continue to the next step to plug in the audio cable. Switch the TV to video mode to display the computer.

Step 3

Plug the single-sided plug of the 3.5 mm audio-to-RCA cable into the green audio port of the laptop computer and plug the red and white plugs on the other side of the cable into the RCA ports of the same colors on the TV.
