How to Connect an iPhone to an iTunes Account

The iPhone can connect to the iTunes Store using either a cellular or Wi-Fi signal. To make purchases you must be signed in to an iTunes account. Connecting an iPhone to an iTunes account is easy; the process depends on your phone's operating system. You can connect via your cellular or Wi-Fi signal (iPhone OS 3.0 or later) or when you sync your iPhone to the iTunes account on your computer (iPhone OS 2.1 or earlier.)

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone USB adapter (if you are connecting to an iTunes account by syncing your iPhone)

Direct iTunes Store Connection

Step 1

Tap "Store" or "iTunes" on your iPhone home screen in order to connect to the iTunes Store. You will be given options to sign in or to create a new account.

Step 2

Tap "Create Account" to create a new iTunes account from your iPhone. If you already have an iTunes account, you can sign in with it instead.

Step 3

Enter the required information to create a new account. You will need to confirm your geographic region, accept the iTunes user agreement, enter your email address and password, and enter the credit card information for the card you wish to associate with your account.

Step 4

Wait while the iPhone transmits your information and connects to the iTunes Store. The amount of time required to connect will depend on the type of signal that you are using (cellular or Wi-Fi) and the signal's strength.

Syncing Your iPhone

Step 1

Sign in to the iTunes account that you wish to associate with your iPhone using the iTunes software on your computer.

Step 2

Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB adapter that came with your phone.

Step 3

Open the "File" menu, then select the "Sync" option to begin the sync with your iPhone. The iTunes account that you are signed in with will be associated with your iPhone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Though you will remain signed in to the iTunes account that you specified while browsing the iTunes Store, you may be prompted to re-enter your password for security purposes when making a purchase.
  • You can change the account that you have associated with your iPhone by tapping "Settings," selecting "Store" and then creating or signing in with a new account.
