How to Delete a Previous Gmail Account & Add a New One on an Android

By Matt Skaggs

Android devices allow you to easily sync your Gmail account with your phone, as well as other associated options, like your contacts, calendars and Google documents. You can remove a non-primary Gmail account from your phone in just a few moments, and your device will remove all the account's settings and data as well, though of course all your data is still safe online. Adding a Google account to your phone is actually quite simple, and you can usually remove an account and add a new one in just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Gmail account

Remove Account

Step 1

Press the "Home" button to reach the Home screen.

Step 2

Press the "Menu" button.

Step 3

Tap "Settings," then "Accounts & Sync," then the account you want to delete.

Step 4

Tap the "Remove Account" button at the bottom of the screen, and confirm that you want to remove the account.

Add Account

Step 1

Open the "Accounts" screen if you're not there already. You can do this from the Home screen by pressing the "Menu" button and tapping "Accounts."

Step 2

Tap the "Add Account" button at the bottom of the display.

Step 3

Tap "Google."

Step 4

Provide your user name and password for your Gmail account.

Step 5

Select the sync options you prefer. You could sync up everything associated with your Gmail account, including your contacts, calendars, books and Google+ notifications, or you could deselect every option and only sync them manually later on. You can always change these settings at another time by going to the "Accounts" menu and tapping the account to view its options.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can remove a primary Google account from your phone, but the process is more involved. The primary account is the very first account you created on the phone, and removing it requires a factory reset. This will delete all your data and settings on your phone and, aside from Android operating system updates, the phone will revert to the state it was in when it was first manufactured. During the process, you will have the option of deleting or saving the data on your device's storage card. You find the factory reset by going to the Home screen and pressing the "Menu" button; then tap "Privacy settings" and then "Factory data reset." After the reset, your device will automatically prompt you to sign into a Gmail account.
