How to Delete Backup on an iPhone

By Jim Campbell

ITunes is used to update your iPhone's firmware and software. Before you update the iPhone's software, you must create a backup. ITunes creates a backup for you, but it takes up storage capacity on your iPhone's drive. After several updates, deleting the backup frees up space on the device. Apple iTunes has a utility that lets you conveniently delete your iPhone backups.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone USB cable

Step 1

Connect your iPhone to a computer using the USB cable. ITunes automatically loads on your computer. If it does not load maximized, double-click the icon in the system tray to maximize the software.

Step 2

Click the iPhone icon in the left panel. After the iPhone is selected, click the "Edit" menu item. Click "Preferences." A new window will open with several preferences shown.

Step 3

Click the "Devices" tab at the top. In the list, several backups are shown. Each of the backups on your iPhone is listed, and you can select any one of them to delete.

Step 4

Click the backups you want to delete. If you want to delete multiple files, hold the "Ctrl" key and click each backup with the mouse button. Click "Delete Backup" to delete it from your device.

Step 5

Click "OK" to close the preferences window. In the left iTunes panel, click the "Eject" button to safely remove the device from your computer.
