How to Download a YouTube File

By Jacqui Lane is a popular Web site founded in 2005 that allows millions of users to upload and share videos with the public. The site is designed to allow users to search for and watch videos; however, it does not allow users to download and save their favorite videos to their hard drives (to do so legally, you must have permission to do so from the video's copyright holder). A third-party application can be used to download videos from Youtube.

Step 1

Download and install the YouTube Downloader program (see Resources). It is a free application that you can use to download videos from YouTube and contains no spyware.

Step 2

Obtain permission from the owner of the video that you would like to download. To download without doing so would violate their copyright and the YouTube terms of service. You can contact the owner by clicking on their YouTube profile and selecting "Send Message."

Step 3

Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to download from the address bar, and paste the URL into the field of the YouTube Downloader program where it says to enter the video URL. Select the button for "Download video from YouTube."

Step 4

Press "Ok" and select the folder where you would like to save the downloaded video. It will be downloaded as a .flv (Flash video) file.

Step 5

If you want to convert it to another format, open YouTube Downloader, select "Convert Video", open your file and you will be given a variety of formats to choose from, including .wmv, .mov and formats for cell phone and PSP video.
