How to Get an iPhone's Ringer to Work

By Amanda Gronot

The iPhone has several ringtones available for you to choose. When you want to set a ringtone, you can access your options through the "Settings" app, located on your iPhone's home screen. If you have extra ringers on your phone, you can access and set these through "Settings" as well. Once you set the ringtone, you will need to make sure that your iPhone's volume is not muted; otherwise, the ringer will not play.

Step 1

Tap the "Settings" icon, which is gray and looks like gears, on your iPhone's home screen. Then tap "Sounds."

Step 2

Swipe your finger up to scroll down, and then press "Ringtone."

Step 3

Scroll through the ringtones, and tap the one you want to set. When you tap it, you also hear it play. A check mark appears next to it, indicating that it is set to be your default ringtone.

Step 4

Press the top of the volume toggle button on the side of your iPhone to ensure that the volume isn't off. Switch the "Silent" button above the volume toggle to "Off." The orange dot indicates that it is on silent, so switch it to show no orange dot.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also set specific ringtones for your contacts by tapping each person in the "Contacts" app and pressing "Ringtone."
