How to Highlight People's Names on Facebook

By Jennifer Leighton

Using Facebook is a simple way to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues for many people today. Facebook users can choose to get the attention of friends by highlighting names, linking to the profile pages of others, in a process called "tagging." You can easily tag people on your friends list in a few simple steps.

Step 1

Access the Internet and navigate to the Facebook login page.

Step 2

Log into your Facebook account using your email address and password.

Step 3

Navigate to the page where you want to place the highlighted (tagged) names. This may be your own homepage (if you want to have tagged names in a status update) or a friend's wall (if you want to have tagged names in a post on their page).

Step 4

Type the message as you want it to appear until you come to the place where you want a name to be tagged.

Step 5

Type in the "@" sign, without the quotation marks, followed by the name of the person that you want tagged. As you type, matching name suggestions from your friends list will appear in a drop-down menu. You may need to enter the entire name before the drop-down menu appears, or the menu may appear after you have typed only a few letters of the name.

Step 6

Click on the name you wish to tag from the drop-down menu. That name will now replace the "@" symbol and will appear in your update. The name will appear to you with a blue background (the indicator that it will be tagged in your update).

Step 7

Type the remainder of your post and click "Share." Your post will appear, including the tagged name. The tagged name will appear as a link, in a blue type.

Tips & Warnings

  • Highlighted names are clickable links which take users directly to the profile page for the person highlighted, unless that user's privacy settings prevent their page from being viewed.
