How to Set Up Voice Mail on a Droid

By Ken White

The Motorola Droid is a smartphone powered by the Android operating system and offered by Verizon Wireless. The Android operating system has useful notification settings for voice mail, including a notification icon in the status bar at the top of the screen. You can drag down and touch this icon to connect directly to your Verizon voice mail. Setting up voice mail service on a Droid is a simple task once the phone has been activated through Verizon.

Step 1

Dial "*86" on your keypad and press the icon that looks like a green phone. At the prompt, enter a four to seven number password, followed by the "#" key. This will be your voice mail password.

Step 2

Say your name at the prompt. Press the "#" key to stop recording. Your name greeting will play back. Press the "*" key to re-record your name or press the "#" key if satisfied.

Step 3

Press "2" on the keypad if you want to use a standard greeting for your voice mail or press "1" to record a custom greeting. In the latter case, press the "#" key when you are finished recording. The custom greeting will play. Press the "*" key to re-record your custom greeting or press "#" if you are satisfied.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you receive a new voice mail message, the Android operating system puts a voice mail icon on the status bar of your Droid. Touch the status bar and drag it down, then tap the voice mail icon to automatically dial "*86" so you can enter your password and listen to your new messages.
