How to Stream to an iPhone With Icecast

By Julius Vandersteen

The iPhone doesn't have a radio receiver, but you can listen to streaming audio from an Icecast radio station over the Internet. The iPhone is a cellphone made by Apple with a touch-sensitive display and a built-in speaker, which you use to listen to audio if you don't want to wear headphones. Icecast is an online service that enables you to listen to a variety of streaming radio stations. The iPhone doesn't have a native app for listening to Icecast streams, so you will need to download a third-party app.

Step 1

Press the iPhone's "Home" button, located below the display.

Step 2

Tap the "App Store" icon on the iPhone's home screen.

Step 3

Tap "Search," then type a search term such as "Icecast," and then tap "Search. A list of search results appears. Tap the name of an app for playing Icecast streams, such as "Internet Radio Box," "Radio" or "Streamly." Tap the word "Free" or the price next to the name of the Icecast-streaming app, then tap "Install," and then type your Apple ID when prompted. The Icecast-streaming app downloads to your iPhone.

Step 4

Tap the icon of the Icecast-streaming app to launch it.

Step 5

Tap the "Directory" or "Stations" button, and then tap "Icecast" to browse for Icecast stations. Tap "Search" if you want to look for an Icecast station, then type its name, and then tap "Search."

Step 6

Tap the name of an Icecast station to start streaming its audio to your iPhone.
