How to Track an iPhone

By Stephen Lilley

When you spend anywhere from $199 to $399 on something as expensive as an iPhone, the fear of losing it or having it stolen is constant. Luckily, Apple has acknowledged this and has introduced "Find my iPhone," a built-in tracking utility that can display the approximate location of your iPhone on a map. Setting it up takes only a few seconds--and, from then on, even if the phone is lost you will have a good idea of where to go to retrieve it.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone
  • MobileMe account

Step 1

Tap the "Settings" icon on the main menu of your iPhone.

Step 2

Tap the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" option. This will open the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" settings application.

Step 3

Tap the "Add Account" option under the "Accounts" section. This allows you to enter the username and password for your MobileMe account. Once you have done this, tap the "Save" option to store this information in your iPhone.

Step 4

Tap the "Find my iPhone" line to switch its status from "OFF" to "ON." You will be asked if the "Find my iPhone" application can use information about your current location--tap "YES" to allow the program to do this.

Step 5

Go to and log in using your username and password. Once you have done this, you will be taken to the main page for your MobileMe account. Select the option that reads "Find my iPhone" on the left side of the screen; your iPhone's approximate location will be displayed on a map for you to track.

Tips & Warnings

  • "Find my iPhone" also gives you the option of remotely erasing the contents of the phone's hard drive. If your iPhone has been stolen or you otherwise can't get it back, erasing the hard drive ensures thieves will not get any personal data.
