How to Track an iPhone With GPS
If you lose your iPhone or the device is stolen, a GPS tracking system can help you recover it. You can also use a GPS tracking system to keep tabs on your employees or children. Apple makes this easy with the "Find My iPhone" app, which operates through your MobileMe account. If you don't yet have a MobileMe account, you can set one up through the "Settings" menu. You can then enable your "Find My iPhone" app and track your iPhone using its GPS feature from any computer with a Web browser.
Set Up MobileMe
Tap "Settings" on your iPhone's home screen. Then tap "Mail, Contacts, Calendars."
Tap "Add Account."
Tap "MobileMe" and enter your Apple ID and password. Verify your email address if you are prompted to do so.
Return to the MobileMe screen. Toggle the "Find My iPhone" switch to "On." Tap "Allow" in the dialog box that appears.
Use Find My iPhone
Go to Me.com and sign into your MobileMe account.
Click the cloud icon in the upper-left corner of the screen. A menu of icons appears. Click the "Find My iPhone" icon on the far right. Enter your password again.
View the map to track your iPhone, which is indicated by the glowing blue dot. You can also use this page to lock, wipe or display a message on your iPhone in the event it is lost or stolen.
Tips & Warnings
- If you have an earlier model iPhone such as a 3G or 3Gs, you can set up a MobileMe account on an iPad or iPod Touch that has the latest software updates. You then can use that MobileMe account on your iPhone. Otherwise, MobileMe isn't free for those models.
