By Alex Zang

Facebook, as well as certain instant messaging programs and chat rooms, allow you to type using symbols in addition to letters. This means that you can type a sentence, than add a heart at the end of it to denote love. Or, if you want to post song lyrics, you can add a musical note. Note that you'll need a keyboard that features a numeric keypad to do this. On a laptop, you can hold the "Fn" key down in order to simulate a number pad.

Step 1

Press "Num Lock" to turn on the Number Lock on your keyboard.

Step 2

Log in to Facebook.com, or open the IM program you want to type the symbols into. Place your cursor in a typing box.

Step 3

Hold down the "ALT" key, and press "3" to get "♥," a black heart.

Step 4

Hold down the "ALT" key and press "1" then "1" again in quick succession to get "♂."

Step 5

Hold down the "ALT" key and press "1" then "3" again in quick succession to get "♪," a musical note.

Step 6

Hold down the "ALT" key and press "0", "1", "6", and "2" in quick succession to create ¢, a cent sign.
