How to Upgrade a Blu Ray Player
Many people consider Blu Ray players to be static devices that require no additional maintenance after purchase. However, Blu Ray players actually have more in common with computers than with traditional DVD players. Most manufacturers are constantly upgrading the firmware for their Blu Ray players in response to customer feedback and to improve performance. Firmware upgrades can also enable new features and playback capabilities.
Things You'll Need
- Ethernet cable
- Computer with CD-RW drive
- Blank CD-R
Update your Blu Ray player via Ethernet. If you have access to the Internet, your Blu Ray player can update it's firmware by dialing in to the server at the manufacturer. Plug an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the back of the Blu Ray player and plug the other end of the cable into your wireless router or modem. Consult your owner's manual for instructions regarding how to access the "Updating Via Ethernet" functions of your particular player. It will typically be under the "Advanced Features" menu.
Update your Blu Ray player by compact disk. If you cannot conveniently connect your Blu Ray player to the Internet, you can access the support site of the manufacturer via web browser and download the firmware upgrade files to your computer. The manufacturers support website address is contained in your manual. Download the upgrade files and save them to the Desktop. Insert a blank compact disk into the CD-RW drive and copy the upgrade files to a blank CD-R. Next, consult your Blu Ray player's owner's manual for the procedure regarding "Upgrading Firmware Via Compact Disk" for your particular model.
Have the manufacturer mail you the latest upgrade disk. If you do not have access to the Internet, you can call the manufacturers customer support number and have them send you a firmware upgrade disk by mail. Typically, there will be no charge for this service. Depending on the manufacturer, upgrade disks sent out by mail typically take 7 to 21 business days to arrive depending on your location. Once you receive the disk in the mail, consult your Blu Ray player's owner's manual for the procedure regarding "Upgrading Firmware Via Compact Disk" for your particular model. Sometimes model specific instructions are also included with the disk.
Purchase a new Blu Ray player. If you have reached the end of the software upgrade path for your particular player, you may have to purchase a newer model. Some manufacturer upgrades can only be achieved by replacing the hardware in your Blu Ray player and cannot be obtained via software update alone.
Tips & Warnings
