How to Write Cell Phone Applications

By Kara Page

Designing and writing a cell phone application of any sort requires a high level of education, experience with programming and coding, and familiarity with your particular platform's operating system. While many apps are available in several platforms, such as iPhone, Android and BlackBerry, begin by writing an app only for the platform with which you are most experienced. Prepare to invest a lot of both time and money into writing your application, as cell phone apps typically take a few months before they begin generating income for the developer.

Step 1

Write a list of features you want to include in your app. Consider its purpose (game, organization, GPS) and make notes on exactly how you will fulfill that purpose. If you are struggling for specific ideas, check out a few similar apps on your cell phone's platform to get an idea of what to do and what not to do.

Step 2

Read and research the details on coding for your cell phone's platform; most cell phones have distinct operating systems with which you will need to become familiar. A few books to check out include "Beginning iPhone 3 Development," "Android Application Development: Programming with the Google SDK" and "Advanced BlackBerry Development."

Step 3

Become an official app developer with your platform. Any cell phone with an app store has a center or organization for developers, including the companies listed in Step 2. Registration typically involves a fee, and you will also need the appropriate cell phone on which to test your app. In the case of iPhone apps, you also need a Mac running OSX.

Step 4

Download all of the training manuals and information available in your development center to find out that platform's specific steps when it comes to publishing an app. Test your app on your cell phone before submitting it to the center, and prepare to wait a few weeks or longer for approval to sell the app.

Step 5

Read the platform's information and suggestions on pricing your cell phone app, and price accordingly. The price you choose, based on the quality and worth of your app, will greatly influence how financially beneficial the app will become for you.
