How Do I Set Up Charter Internet?
You’ve obtained your Charter cable modem, and now it’s time to get it all hooked up so that you can get online. Setting up your Charter modem involves connecting its included cables and then authorizing your service through the Web browser on your computer. If you also picked up a Charter Wi-Fi router, it's easiest to set that up now as well.
Connect the provided coaxial cable between the cable outlet in your home and the coaxial input on the back of the Charter modem.
Connect the modem’s power cord to an available electrical outlet.
Connect an Ethernet cable from the "Ethernet" or "WAN" port on the back of the Charter modem to an Ethernet port on your computer. Most Charter modems come with an Ethernet cable. If you also have a Charter Wi-Fi router to pair with the modem, connect the Ethernet cable to the yellow “Internet” port on the wireless router instead of the Ethernet port on your computer. When this cable is connected, plug in the router’s power cable and wait for the power light to turn green and for the Wi-Fi indicator lights to light up.
Open a new Web browser window on your computer. If Charter’s Identify Your Account page does not appear automatically, visit the Identify Your Account page manually (link in Resources).
Select “Install New Service” under the I Am Here To heading and then enter your primary account phone number, account number and ZIP code in the provided fields. Press “Next” when you are finished.
Tips & Warnings
- If you’re using a Charter wireless router in conjunction with the Charter modem, you will need the router’s password in order to access the Internet from other mobile devices. This password is printed on a label attached to the router itself. You’ll also find the device’s Wi-Fi network name on this label.
- Once your modem and router are set up, you access them on your Windows 8.1 computer just like any other Wi-Fi signal. Point your mouse to the bottom-right corner of your screen and click “Settings.” Select “Network” and then click the “Connect” button located next to the name of your Charter Wi-Fi network. The name of this network is displayed next to the SSID heading on the label on the router itself. Enter your Wi-Fi password in the provided field and click “Next” to connect.
- To protect against lightning strikes and other power surges, consider plugging both the modem and router into a surge protector.
- You can also connect up to four Ethernet cables to the Charter Wi-Fi router. Ports are found on the back of the router and are labelled LAN, PC or with the numbers 1 through 4.
