How Do I Set Up Windstream Wireless?
Modems with onboard router capabilities make it a snap to access the Internet on Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops and smartphones. In order to get your Windstream modem unit ready for use, first you need to connect its cables and configure its Internet settings. Windstream provides all of the necessary cables with its network devices.
Connect the phone filter that came with the Windstream modem to an available telephone jack in your home. The phone filter is the small plastic device with two phone jacks on the front. It plugs directly into a phone jack in the same way as a standard telephone cord.
Connect one end of the grey telephone cable that came with the Windstream modem to the “DSL/Modem” jack on the phone filter.
Connect the other end of the grey telephone cable to the “DSL” or “ADSL” port on the Windstream modem.
Plug in the modem’s power adapter. Consider using a surge protector between your modem and the outlet to guard against voltage spikes, including those caused by lightning strikes.
Connect one end of the provided yellow Ethernet cable to the “Eth1” port on the Windstream modem. If you no longer have the yellow cable that came with the modem, you can use any standard Ethernet cable provided it is long enough to reach comfortably between your modem and computer.
Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to an available Ethernet or LAN port on your computer. If you’re unsure which is the Ethernet or LAN port on your computer, it will be the same size and shape as the Eth1 port on the modem. Some computers have several Ethernet or LAN ports. Most laptops have just one.
Wait for the “DSL” and “Internet” lights on the Windstream modem to turn solid green. This may take a few minutes as the modem attempts to establish a connection with Windstream. The lights may flash multiple times before eventually turning solid green.
Open the default Web browser on your computer to initiate the installation wizard that helps you to set up your phone line for use with Windstream’s service. You must agree to the terms of service and will be prompted to enter details from your Windstream service contract, so have your documents handy.
Tips & Warnings
- If the Internet Service Setup screen doesn’t appear automatically when you launch your Web browser, visit Windstream’s Internet Service Setup site to initiate the process (link in Resources).
- Once you’ve configured your modem, you can access it from any compatible wireless device.
- If you plan to use your computer wirelessly, you can unplug the Ethernet cable from your computer after modem configuration is complete. From this point forward, the Windstream modem functions like any other wireless router. To connect to it from your computer, point your mouse to the bottom-right corner on your Windows 8 PC and choose “Settings.” Click “Network,” locate the Windstream Wi-Fi network and click “Connect.” Enter the password displayed next to the "Key" heading on the bottom of the Windstream modem and click “Next” to finish connecting wirelessly.
