How to Change a Display Name in Gmail

By Elvis Michael

Gmail’s robust customization options enable you to change many different visual, technical and personal settings. These range from modifying the display formatting of your inbox, to customizing the name used to identify you as the email sender. Changing your Gmail display name provides a greater sense of flexibility, while potentially reducing privacy or personal branding concerns. You may change your display name through Gmail’s Options panel directly from your default Web browser.

Step 1

Sign in to the Gmail account in question; Click the gear icon from your inbox screen, then select “Settings.”

Step 2

Click the “Accounts and Import” tab from the ensuing menu options. This section allows you to change personal settings, import emails from external clients and include additional email accounts.

Step 3

Click “Edit Info” for the email address listed next to the Send Mail As section.

Step 4

Type the display name you wish to use in the empty Name field. This is the name that all recipients see within their From field.

Step 5

Click “Save Changes” to apply your new Gmail display name. Changes take place immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to also update your signature to the new display name, if applicable. Click the "General" tab from the Settings menu in question, then update your current signature accordingly. Click "Save Changes" to apply the new signature.
  • Changing the display name still maintains your original email address; you must create a brand new address to change its default display name.
