How to Change Gmail Background or Theme

By Cornelius Fortune

Sometimes your email’s background can use an update. Maybe you’re looking for something colorful, muted or playful. Gmail provides a variety of options to change the look of your email account. After signing into your Gmail, click the gear icon on the right of the screen, and select “Themes” from the drop-down menu. From here, you can choose your new theme.

Getting the Most From Your Themes

Gmail’s themes are broken up into four options: Color Themes, HD Themes, Custom Themes and Classic Themes. The Color Themes include such choices as Dark, Blue, Soft Gray and Mustard. The HD Themes include Wood, Desk (which mimics a wooden desk), Ocean and Graffiti. Custom Themes fall under two categories: Light and Dark. Here you can add your favorite photos from your personal files. The Classic Themes section features colorful images such as Candy, Ninja and Android.

Customizing and Sharing

Once you customize your Gmail account, you can share these customized themes with others. After you have uploaded your custom image, Gmail will prompt you to share it. (This is optional.) You can use either Google+ (Google’s social networking website), copy and paste the link that’s provided, or simply email it. Additionally, if you save the link to your clipboard, it can be used for social media websites, or for offline purposes.
