How to Change Your Gmail Name

By Aaron Wein

Gmail is a free email service provided by Google with various features such as labeling, chatting and contact synchronization. There are also many customizable options. For instance, users can change the color scheme, choose how many messages to show on one page and add signatures. Another customizable feature is the ability to alter the name that appears on outgoing messages. This can be useful if you don't want to give out your full name for privacy reasons.

Step 1

Go to and log into your account. See Resources for a direct link to the log-in page.

Step 2

Click "Settings" at the top of the Gmail page, then open the "Accounts and Import" tab.

Step 3

Click "Edit info," located to the right of your email address. A pop-up window will appear.

Step 4

Click the bubble next to the empty text box below your name and type your desired name into the text box.

Step 5

Save the changes by clicking "Save Changes."
