How to Convert an AVI File to a JPEG

AVI files are multimedia video files which can be played on your computer. JPEG files are static images. Since AVI files contain sound and video, conversion to a JPEG involves screen captures. An application can be installed on your PC for serial capture (motion capture) of your AVI file; this article outlines a simple screen capture using the existing utilities installed with Windows.

Taking Screen Captures

Step

Launch the application to play your AVI file. Standard applications such as Windows Media Player are often part of the Windows operating system installation. Other applications can be used, such as those that are packaged with your camcorder or digital camera.

Step

Open your AVI file by selecting Open under File in your top menu bar and choosing your file before clicking the Open button.

Step

Press the Play button in your application.

Step

When you have reached the desired screen to capture, press the Pause button.

Step

Press the Print Screen button on your keyboard (this button is often labeled, "Prnt Scrn").

Step

Check that a JPEG file was saved to your desktop or in My Pictures folder as Picture X, where X is the number of the screen capture.
