How to Convert an AVI File to a JPEG
AVI files are multimedia video files which can be played on your computer. JPEG files are static images. Since AVI files contain sound and video, conversion to a JPEG involves screen captures. An application can be installed on your PC for serial capture (motion capture) of your AVI file. A simple screen capture will convert your AVI file to a JPEG using the existing utilities installed with Windows.
Things You'll Need
- Windows computer
- Windows Media Player or other application
- AVI file saved to desktop
Taking Screen Captures
Launch the application to play your AVI file. Standard applications such as Windows Media Player are often part of the Windows operating system installation. Other applications can be used, such as those that are packaged with your camcorder or digital camera.
Open your AVI file by selecting "Open" under "File" in your top menu bar and choosing your file before clicking the "Open" button.
Press the "Play" button in your application.
When you have reached the desired screen to capture, press the "Pause" button.
Press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard (this button is often labeled, "Prnt Scrn").
Check that a JPEG file was saved to your desktop or in "My Pictures" folder as Picture X, where X is the number of the screen capture.
Tips & Warnings
- Before playing your AVI file, you may want to change the picture to play full screen, instead of in a smaller window. This function can be accessed in the top menu bar, usually under View (check your application's instructions for specific settings).Rename your JPEG file for easy reference.
- Keep the AVI player application open when you press the "Print Screen" button, or you will take a picture of other windows or areas of your desktop.
