How to Convert Audio Speech to Text

By James Stone

Changing audio speech to text requires Windows Speech Recognition software application. This program converts spoken words or letters to text, which then appears inside a text editing application (Wordpad, Notepad, Microsoft Word or an online-based application). When you speak into your computer's microphone, you also have the option of dictating text to fill out forms or use anywhere else that requires the addition of text.

Step 1

Click "Start" and then click the "All Programs" link.

Step 2

Click the "Accessories" folder and then click the "Ease of Access" folder. Click the "Windows Speech Recognition" application shortcut. The Windows Speech Recognition panel displays on screen.

Step 3

Open Wordpad, Notepad, Microsoft Word or another text editing application. Click the "Microphone" icon on the Speech Recognition panel to begin dictating speech to text.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk slower than normal and emphasize words for optimal performance.
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7 are the only versions of the operating system to offer the Windows Speech Recognition software.
