How to Convert EPS to DXF

By Tammy Clevenger

A file with the EPS file extension is an Encapsulated PostScript file. The DXF Data Exchange file format is an AutoDesk AutoCAD file exchange format that enables designers to exchange files between applications. To convert an EPS file to a DXF file, use a program that supports both file formats. Adobe Illustrator, with a DXF plug-in will open EPS files, and then export the file to the DXF format.

Things You'll Need

  • Adobe Illustrator, with DXF plug-in installed

Step 1

Open Adobe Illustrator.

Step 2

Click the “File” option on the top navigation bar, and then click “Open.” The file navigation window opens.

Step 3

Navigate to and click on the EPS file. Click “Open.” The EPS file opens in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 4

Click the “File” option on the top navigation bar, and then click “Export.” The File Export window opens.

Step 5

Type a name for the file to export in the “File Name” input box.

Step 6

Click the “File Type” drop-down box and then click the “AutoCAD Drawing (*.dwg, *.dxf)” file option. The wording of the option differs depending on the plug-in installed. Check the checkbox in front of the “.dxf” option, if it appears. Otherwise, make sure the “.dxf” file extension is appended to your file name.

Step 7

Click the “Export” button. The file is exported as a DXF file.
