How to Convert ePub to Kindle

By Shea Laverty

EPUB files can be converted for use on a Kindle e-reader using desktop conversion software or online conversion services.

EPUB e-book files can be converted to a Kindle-compatible format using a desktop converter app or online conversion site. Since the Kindle doesn't natively support EPUB files, conversion is the only way to enjoy your EPUB books on your Kindle without a separate purchase from the Kindle store.

Warning

In some cases, converting the file may require that you remove any Digital Rights Management scheme. While a New York Court in 2014 contended that removing DRM for personal use doesn't constitute infringement, doing so may still constitute a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If conversion requires that you strip away DRM, it may be best to find another version of the file instead.

  • Metadata adjusts the book's title, author, publisher, cover and other metadata information.
  • Look & Feel changes the font, font size, line height, indent size and other elements of the text presentation.
  • Heuristic Processing scans the book for common patterns and fixes them. These patterns include unformatted chapter headings and subheadings, removing unnecessary hyphens, deleting blank lines between paragraphs and consistently formatting scene breaks.
  • Page Setup enables you to use device-based profiles to adjust how the converted file interprets spacing, resolution dependent content and margins. Ideally, you should pick Kindle from the Output profile list, unless you want to enter your own margins.
  • Structure Detection scans the book for structure like page breaks and chapter marks.
  • Table of Contents adds a linked table of contents to the book.
  • Search & Replace finds phrases within the book and replaces them with the specified text.
  • MOBI Output or AZW3 Output adjusts output-specific information, such ignoring margins, not adding a table of contents, enabling sharing via social media and disabling content compression.
  • Debug is used only to diagnose problems with the conversion process and generally won't be needed.
