How to Convert MP4 to Wav Files

By Cameron Easey

Video files come in many formats including MP4. The MP4 video format is based on Apples MOV video format. This video format contains a separate video and audio stream which can be converted to other types of files such as WAV. WAV is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format which is used on Windows computer systems for uncompressed audio. An MP4 file can be converted to an WAV file by following a few steps to extract the audio stream.

Step 1

Install a movie player on the computer that can play files encoded in the MP4 file format. The QuckTime movie player from Apple as well as the Windows Media Player from Microsoft can play a MP4 video file.

Step 2

Install the The K-Lite Codec Pack on the system. The K-Lite Code Pack contains many codec formats that media players use to play files such as those encoded the the MP4 format.

Step 3

Use a software sound recorder to record the audio stream of an MP4 video file. One of the best audio recorders to use is Audacity. The program is free to download and use.

Step 4

Download and install the Audacity audio recorder. When the program has been installed, an icon will be placed on your desktop. Double-click the icon to open the program.

Step 5

Record the audio while playing the MP4 video file. Open the MP4 file in your preferred media player or double-click the file to open the default player. Press the pause button once the movie file begins to play.

Step 6

Go to the Audacity audio recorder and press the record button. This will start the recording of the audio that is being sent to the computer's speakers. The disk space available on the hard drive for the recording is displayed at the bottom of the program.

Step 7

Go back to the media player and press the "Play" button to resume the movie. After resuming the movie, go back to Audacity to monitor the progress of the recording. When the video has completed, press the "Stop" button within Audacity.

Step 8

Save the recorded audio as a "WAV" file. Click on the Tools drop-down menu and select the option to "Export as WAV." Select a directory to save the file and then enter a file name. Click the "Save" button to save the WAV file.
