How to Convert REM to MP3
For a while, consumers who wished to have mobile email and Internet access were limited to Palm Treos and other such early models. But now it's not uncommon for costumers to routinely switch from Blackberry to iPhone to Android as each new model is released. One way that companies try to keep customers from switching is to include unique file extensions, making it difficult to transfer what they like about one phone to another. Blackberry uses the ".rem" extension on audio files, making it difficult to switch the files from the Blackberry to a different smartphone.
Things You'll Need
- USB connection cable
- Audio conversion software
Connect the phone's memory to the computer. This can either be done with a USB cable connection or, if available, by removing the phone's memory card and placing it in the computer.
Copy the file you wish to convert from the phone to the computer. The file, likely called (filename).mp3.rem, is not playable on the computer at this point.
Right-click on the file and select "Rename."
Remove the ".rem" extension on the file leaving only "(filename).mp3." The file may now be playable on the computer or transferable to another phone. If it is not see the section below.
Download audio conversion software. There are many programs available to convert an .rem file to an .mp3. However most are not free, nor do they offer free trials. Few free downloads specify whether or not they are able to convert from .rem to .mp3, but it may be cheaper to try out a number of free programs to find one that successfully converts the file before purchasing one. In this case, unfortunately, trial and error is your best free option.
Install the audio conversion software and open the program.
Open the file you wish to convert. This may be where the limits of the software are found, if the .rem file is not found then the software isn't able to convert the file. Use a different type of converter to complete the conversion.
Convert the file. Each audio converter has a different operation. Some allow you to use the "Save as" option through the "File" menu to convert the file into a different format. Others have you select the original file and the extension you wish to convert the file into and click "Convert" or "Begin" in the program interface. Follow the procedure for your particular program and the conversion should be complete shortly thereafter.
Tips & Warnings
- Unfortunately most free audio conversion programs don't list .rem in their descriptions, so it may be difficult to find a free converter. Before spending money on any Blackberry conversion software be sure that the program can convert the file from the Blackberry extension to a more universal one, and not just from .mp3 to the Blackberry extension.
